DMS has officially become a Leader in Me campus! LIM period stands for Leader In Me.  During this shortened period, our students will be provided with Social Emotional Learning lessons that will support them as individuals and as students. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to explore ways to give back to their campus, community, and beyond. Our theme this school year is Be the Change and we will utilize some of the time in LIM period to help our students explore how they can be the change they wish to see in the world. Leader in Me helps schools create well-rounded learners by developing the whole-person and preparing students to become life-ready leaders.

Leader in Me unites students, staff, and families around a common goal to prepare students with college, career, and life-readiness skills that are necessary to thrive in today’s ever-changing, fast-paced environment, like:

What Students are Learning and Practicing this Month at DMS

During the months of August and September, DMS students will learn about Habit 1: Be Proactive.  The students will be able to make proactive choices daily by using proactive language, identifying things they can control, learning from mistakes, being a leader and having a “can do” attitude to be successful at school.

What Students were Learning and Practicing in Previous Months at DMS

October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. On Friday, October 16, we are asking all students and DMS staff to “Wear Boots to STOMP Out Bullying!”   DMS students will participate in lessons about Standing Up for Others.  Students will also learn about Identity and Inclusion, #NoOneEatsAlone. Students will be encouraged to meet someone new at lunch and invite them to join their lunch area.

During the months of November and December, students will learn about Habit 2: Begin with End in Mind. The students will be able to visualize where they are headed in the future with family, friends, school and a career by creating a personal mission statement and setting short and long term goals to be successful.  DMS students will participate in lessons about their choices and consequences and how those actions will effect school, family and friends.  Students will take time to think about their future and what goals they need to achieve to be successful.

During the month of January, students will learn about Habit 3: Put First Things First. The students will be able to manage their time appropriately, prioritize their hobbies verse responsibilities, organize their schoolwork, and be self-disciplined. DMS students and staff will also be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge during the month of January.  DMS students will participate in lessons that teach organization strategies for their schoolwork and their chores at home.

During the month of February, students will learn about Habit 4: Think Win Win. Students will learn about small acts of kindness, the importance of keeping commitments, thinking of others, showing gratitude, and other ways to strengthen their peer/family relationships. The students will be able to identify different types of attitudes such as Win-Win, Win-Lose, Lose-Win and Lose-Lose.  Once students can recognize their type of attitude, they will apply strategies to a situation with a friend or family member and turn it into a positive Win-Win experience.
